I am now uncomfortable with my own neighborhood. I don't want to bike home after work today, past that intersection that I'm so familiar with but is probably still surrounded in police tape. I don't want to run through that area during my long weekend runs. I don't want to spend the next year commuting through that neighborhood on an expensive bike (that I love), with a blackberry and white skin.
Maybe I am overreacting. But as someone who spends a lot of time with the sidewalks and roads of her community, this sucks. I have friends and an Andrew who are in a neighborhood that has had 6 homicides this year, and in a city that had 5 homicides last weekend. And that's the price you pay of living in a city, especially Baltimore, but I guess it never really hit me until now.
This has nothing to with running. Or, in a way, everything to do with running.

"The suspects accused in the killing of a Johns Hopkins research assistant had been out that night 'hunting to rob someone,' and later told witnesses that they had robbed and hurt a 'white boy,' according to court records."
ReplyDeleteWhat happens if I or someone I love is in the vicinity next time someone decides to go hunting to rob someone? A white someone, in particular, in an area of town of there are few?
Wow. That quote is seriously disturbing. Maybe you should get pepper spray or something? Not perfect, but a thought.
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry about this, princess. I wish I were coming out with Mom this weekend, but let me know if you want to talk. I've had roughly similar experiences, but certainly nothing quite like this. For now, of course, just try to balance your common-sense notion of what's safe with your need to have a little fun and get some exercise.
